This week you are required to read the following selected material: Howitt, A. & Leonard, H. (2009). Managing Crises: Responses to Large-Scale Emergencies. CQ Press: Washington D.C. Specific Areas •Chapter 15: Security Planning for the 2004 Democratic National Convention (p. 567). •External Resources (to be researched by the students to support research paper). Students, This week you are responsible for authoring and submitting a research paper in which you will use applicable course materials and external researched sources to analyze and discuss a selected case bearing real-life implications. General Instructions In order to have your paper accepted, you need to comply with ALL of the following: 1.Produce a paper incorporating between 7-10 pages of solid discussion (excluding title page and “references” section). 2.Support your research paper with at least 15 solid scholarly sources (articles published in peer-reviewed journals, approved dissertations or theses, textbooks, official government reports, etc.). Note that due to the nature of the topic you will be using a variety of news articles. However, their role is to supplement (NOT TO SUBSTITUTE) your scholarly sources. 3.Do not use popular sources like Wikipedia, WebMD or blogs. 4.Format your paper from cover to cover according to APA rules (including your listed references). 5.Also, for EVERY statement in which you make a claim that is not based on information that you either witnessed or can be considered a common knowledge (e.g. Germany lost WWII), you MUST cite or disclose (according to APA rules) authorship of the sources from which you learned the proffered information. If most of your paper does not reflect the present rule, your paper will be rejected because it will either constitute a collage of personal opinions or an amalgamation of plagiarized (even if it is inadvertent) content. NOTE: citing the last sentence of a paragraph only supports that closing sentence and not the preceding sentences contained in the paragraph. 6.You must use headers and subheaders to adequately organize your discussion/paper. 7.ONLY use either Arial or Times New Roman letter style with a size 12 Font. 8.Use a limited amount of direct quotes or block quotes (direct quotes containing more than 40 words). Your paper should be double-spaced from cover to cover (adding unnecessary spacing will carry severe penalties in the final grade of the assignment). Specific Instructions After studying the strengths and weaknesses of the security planning process implemented for the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston (required weekly reading), you need to: •Describe in detail the strengths and weaknesses of the security plan implemented at the 2000 Democratic National Convention (DNC) held in Los Angeles, and the issues leading to continued clashes between protesters and security assets. •Based on the above, compare and contrast the operational challenges security planners faced during both the 2000 DNC and 2004 DNC events. •Explain how (not just what, but how) you would have attempted to avoid the emergency situations that affected the 2000 DNC. Your paper needs to include the following nomenclature (Formatted via APA rules) I. Title Page II. Body a. Introduction (use the title of your paper as your header here – not “Introduction”) b. Background c. The significance of the studied case(s) d. Discussion and Analysis e. Conclusions and Recommendations (Here you will present your final positions based on your discussion and analysis of the issues. Do not forget to include lessons learned, and underscore responsibilities that went unmet and the need to avoid the recurrence of such outcome) III. References (formatted alphabetically and according to APA rules) The attached material is from Howitt, A. & Leonard, H. (2009). Managing Crises: Responses to Large-Scale Emergencies.
