Identify a real-world historical or contemporary example of a coalition between African
Americans and a non-Black group in the United States. Answer the following questions about
the coalition:
• Describe the who, what, when, where and why of the coalition. Tell which
particular sets of people were involved in this coalition, and who led the coalition.
Explain whether the coalition was a voting bloc, a political pressure group, an economic
partnership, etc. In discussing the when and where, be sure to explain the social, political
or cultural context that facilitated the coalition. So don’t just state the when and where,
but explain why the coalition formed at this particular time and place. Finally, in
explaining the “why,” focus on clearly stating the goal(s) of the coalition. What was this
coalition aiming to accomplish or change? (about 2-4 paragraphs)
• Identify TWO reasons why these groups entered into coalition with one another. Don’t
just state the reasons. Elaborate on your answers. (about 1-2 paragraphs)
• Describe whether the coalition met its goals(s), and explain why it did or did not. (about
2-3 paragraphs)
Total paper length should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, 12 point Times New Romans font. Cite
