1. Douglass gives many examples of the brutality of slavery. (ex. Demby’s story).
2. He also refutes (shows how it is wrong) some of the excuses some people use to rationalize their treatment of slaves and the practice of slavery (ex. slaves sing because they are happy).
3. In addition to his story, he adds many thoughtful remarks about many topics, most related to slavery and man’s inhumanity to man, but about other things as well. (ex. “It is certain that slavery at the south must soon become unscriptural; for thousands are ushered into the world, annually, who, like myself, owe their existence to white fathers, and those fathers most frequently their own masters.”)
For this discussion board:
A.) Pick an example for number one OR number two that stood out to you, identify it, and explain why you think it is important. Do not use the example I already gave!
B.) Pick a quote that is an example of number three and explain the point you think Douglass is trying to make with it. Some of his discussions are pretty long, but limit your quoted example to no more than a few sentences. Your discussion should be in paragraph form.
