You may NOT write about “The Black Cat”

 

Your essay should be at least 2 pages long plus a works cited page.

It should include standard MLA format, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman 12 point font, be double-spaced (2.0), and have a works cited page.

Your essay’s thesis should be the last sentence of the 1st paragraph, and it should explain “how” or “why” something gothic happens in the story. Or, put another way, your essay’s thesis should explain what the story “says” about one particular gothic aspect in the tale.

Use the following for evidence to support your thesis:

1 primary source (short story or movie)

  • at least 4 primary citations (quotes from the story)

at least 2 secondary sources (scholarly journal articles and/or academic ebooks, all from BC Library)

  • at least 4 secondary citations (quotes from the scholarly journal articles and/or academic ebooks, all from the BC Library)

Examples of gothic themes may include:

1. Repression – the use of force or violence to control a group of people; the process and effect of keeping particular thoughts and wishes out of your conscious mind in order to defend or protect it 

2. Puritanism – the belief that it is important to work hard and control yourself, and that pleasure is wrong or unnecessary; culture of shame tied to guilt, original sin, and visions of Hell common to the Puritan religion 
3. Religion
4. The Supernatural 
5. Guilt 
6. Paranoia – an extreme and unreasonable feeling that other people do not like you or are going to harm or criticize you 
7. Insanity 
8. Alcoholism/Drug Use 
9. Abhumans – Having some human characteristics, but others which are supernatural, alien, or monstrous; partially human (vampires, wolfmen, etc.) 
10. Subhumans – Of a lower order of being than the human; not worthy of a human being; debased or depraved creature. (alien lifeform, etc.) 
11. Ghosts 
12. Monsters 
13. Uncanny – strange or mysterious; difficult or impossible to explain, especially in a typically normal setting (pile of clothes in bedroom that looks like monster in the dark)
 14. Grotesque – comically or repulsively ugly or distorted (gargoyle) 
15. Corpses, bodies, disease 
16. Abjection/Domestic Abjection – (of something bad) experienced or present to the maximum degree.(of a person or their behavior) completely without pride or dignity; self-abasing. In a domestic situation such as a family at home, domestic abjection occurs when a debasing situation is present 
17. Fear of Women/Sexuality 
18. Fear of Nature/Wilderness/Frontier 
19. Fear of technology/mechanization
