BACKGROUND: Now that we are looking at young children, preschool and elementary school becomes a big and important part of their “microsystem” (remember Bronfenbrenner from chapter 1?)
Obviously, parents continue to be a very important part of children’s development.  But children spend a growing amount of time with peers and educators in this period of life.
To prepare for this assignment, you. need to review Baumrind’s typology of parenting (warmth, discipline, etc.), the various types of schooling and education you read about (e.g. Montessori, child centered, teacher centered, etc.) AND the big developmental accomplishments of this period (emotional regulation, peer relationships and play, and the resulting types of parenting (authoritative, etc.),
ASSIGNMENT: think about and describe ONE specific scene from your early schooling (8 points) and assess it in terms of a) Baumrind’s parenting types as reflected in your teacher’s behavior (7 points), b) schooling type(s) you experienced as discussed in our text (7 points), c) at least one key developmental accomplishment of this period (7 points). (1 extra point thrown in for strong proofreading.)
DETAILS DETAILS!  So paint a picture of a particular teacher in a particular class in a particular school in a particular time.  And help me see that how you see it all now, looking back with these two chapters in your back pocket.
Caveat: if you don’t have any or any good memories of these early school daze, and/or would just rather not share here from a personal perspective, I encourage you focus your writing on either how you’ve seen educators depicted in various media (e.g. Tv shows, movies, books, etc.) and/or from what you have heard from good friends or family members’ experiences (maintaining confidentiality by not revealing names). If you are a parent, you could also speak from that perspective in terms of what pre-school and early education options you have discovered. The key is to show me your understanding of Baumrind and key developmental accomplishments at this time, regardless of who the protagonist in your narrative is.
If I were doing this, I know I would go back to 2nd grade, when I left Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Athens, Greece. I would have a lot of fun thinking about how different my teachers and schools in Greece were for me, and how that compared to school experiences in America before and after, was then what I just left. Iassroooms I experienced  would be sure to discuss a) teachers in terms of Baumrind, b) the more child centered vs. teacher centered classrooms I experienced, and c) how this impacted my self-confidence and attitudes as a student, among other things…there are a lot of individual scenarios in each of this settings I could focus in on.
So have a little fun!
