our paper will answers the following questions in two parts based on this hypothetical – you must complete both parts
Imagine a 22-year-old female offender named Veronica who gave birth to her child while incarcerated and has a history of drug abuse, dropped out of high school, and joblessness and who has a previous conviction for aggravated assault and a previous conviction for grand larceny. She is being detailed in jail and currently faces a third felony conviction for drug possession.
Part A: Of the five goals of criminal punishment discussed in the course, explain which goal/goals you believe should be pursued by the criminal justice system and why. Explain your answer by referring to the shortcomings and problems of the remaining four goals. (2 pages approx – i.e for the first page, you can choose the goal and explain why, for the second page, explain why the other goals don’t work)
For example you can choose the goal of “rehabilitation” – explain what it is and why this should be pursued by the system in holding Veronica accountable. Then explain why the other goals should not be used in holding her accountable.
Part B: Choose a state and assume Veronica is convicted for drug possession. (3 pages approx)
Research the sentencing policies regarding conviction for drug possession of a state of your choosing. (i.e. how many years of prison will Veronica receive? you can estimate based on the law that you research online). Describe how that state would determine Veronica’s sentencing options.
Then research and find existing, potential evidence-based correctional interventions that would best serve her all needs (i.e. parent, drug issue, education issue, employment issue, and repeat offender) and why. Explain what evidence-based interventions would be most effective to address her needs and why.
one place to find good interventions is https://crimesolutions.ojp.gov/
You should also talk about how the system should use a criminogenic risk and needs assessment tool to determine her needs. Visit here for more info https://www.pewtrusts.org/~/media/legacy/uploadedfiles/pcs_assets/2011/pewriskassessmentbriefpdf.pdf
Your interventions must address her current criminogenic needs BUT if you want you can add additional needs you need to explain how your system would determine the needs via a risk/needs assessment tool. Then share what other interventions can be used to help her. (for example you can state that you want her to be involved in a parenting program since she is a mother; complete her GED; go to counseling)
But you need to provide evidence or citations on why you are recommending these correctional interventions or programs for her. You have to back up with evidence or citation the interventions that you want the system to use. Again, one place to find good interventions with evidence is https://crimesolutions.ojp.gov/
For example you may want to talk about her going to the Nursery at Bedford. Read more here and cite information from this page: https://hourchildren.org/how-we-help/prison-based-family-services-programs/
Cite all relevant concepts and sources discussed in the course. The paper will count towards 20% of your final grade.
Each paper must:
1. Include a title page, introduction, body, conclusion, page numbers, and bibliography
2. Include at least four (4) additional criminological sources (journal articles or books) besides the class readings. These additional sources cannot be textbooks.
3. Be formatted in APA style This syllabus is subject to change at the professor’s discretion.
4. Be typed in 12-point font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins
