The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity to observe and to make sense of someone who has battled some form of diagnosable psychological disorder (even if they’ve never been formally diagnosed). The subject of your observations needs to be the protagonist of an approved biography – for example, John Nash of A Beautiful Mind – someone who can be diagnosed with a disorder according to DSM5 criteria. In the paper, which can be about 10-15 double-spaced pages in length (or even longer if you prefer), it will be necessary for you to: 1) describe all relevant phenomena as described in the book (including symptoms or abnormal behaviors, functioning in relevant domains, variations over time or across different environmental contexts, etc.); 2) classify (or diagnose) these phenomena according to DSM5, being sure to give a detailed account of the specific DSM diagnostic criteria they meet for each relevant disorder; 3) attempt to make sense of the origins (etiology) of these phenomena in light of the relevant material covered in class; 4) discuss any treatment recommendations or other helpful strategies you may have for this person in light of your analyses; and 5) refer somewhere in the paper to at least two published scholarly articles/books (not your textbook!) which support any of your conclusions.
