Objective
The primary objective of this assignment is to involve students in a community based activity that relates to the hunger and environmental issues discussed in class. Service Learning helps students make real the issues that involve our community and apply scientific knowledge to understand physiological effects of hunger on malnutrition and health.
SJSU students are now able to do in person or virtual volunteer work this semester. My SJS4 does have virtual opportunities, but most of them do not apply to this class so we are encouraging individuals to complete the alternate assignment given these limitations. Alternate Assignment
This report was created in Spring 2020, when we went to shelter in place. Several months have gone by so there is much more insight and understanding. The report was originally designed for students to supplement volunteer hours they already completed, but with the new limitations from administration, we do not anticipate many volunteer opportunities will be available so this will be the primary means to satisfy your hours.
Important Information about this assignment
If you are doing no volunteer hours, you should be completing a minimum of the upper end word range for full credit on the paper.
Please make sure you utilize information from all resources and cite it in the paper.

Be sure if you are not completing the 10 community service hours you are turning in questions 1-6.
Community Service Alternate Project
This assignment should be used by those who are unable to complete any of the required 10 hours of virtual service. (If you have completed some but not all of the required 10 hours of service, you should contact the instructor. Depending on the number of hours you completed, you will be assigned only some portions of this assignment.)
Objective
The purpose of this assignment is to replace the community service hours and the service-learning ­aspect of the course. While this is not the optimal situation and does not give you the hands-on experience that is so beneficial, it will give you an idea of domestic hunger, poverty and powerlessness both in this area and nationally. In addition, it ties in COVID-19 or other disaster-like situations that can exacerbate the incredibly fragile situation that many people are in. Survey estimates in 2019 found 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. While all of us have been personally affected by this situation, some are experiencing more hardships than others in terms of health, personal situations, and financial situations.

Reflect on what has been done to help workers and the economy so far, in terms of financial assistance, and the recent efforts to provide a new round of financial stimulus, which have not succeeded. What do you think should happen? Do you have other ideas for aid to those who have been most hurt by COVID-19, both in terms of health, food security, and economic situation? You may research and provide ideas from CREDIBLE sources (no social media posts), or your own suggestions.

Why and how the agency started
Who funds the agency including donations, monetary contributions and volunteer hours?
How long has it been operating in the area and how it originated?
What the target population is and the social and cultural concerns that affect the way the agency operates.
How the projects of the agency impact the nutritional status of the target population (make sure you include the agency’s programs in this section). If the program does not directly deal with nutrition, how does it empower the person to be able to feed themselves (i.e. job training allows you to afford food).
Part B: Please provide a second national non-profit agency that has assisted in the COVID-19 outbreak or other national disasters and provide the same information above for that agency. (250 words)
Your Own Reflections
Using information from the class, how does the information from this paper impact your perception of Domestic Hunger vs. World Hunger? You will need to provide specific information from class to support your answers from a world hunger standpoint.
How do disasters exacerbate poverty and powerlessness including your specific experience with COVID-19? Feel free to use personal or firsthand experiences.
Lastly, how do disasters, like COVID-19 impact the nutritional status of the individuals. You will need to provide specific information from the sections on nutrition, the food system, or the health implications of the food system. You do not need to limit yourself to the COVID-19 situation and you can include both worldwide and domestic disaster situations for this section. Is it possible to empower people in situations like this?
This section should be 250 to 500 words, and please provide references for any cited information.

If you find an agency that speaks to you from the list, make sure they are still registered in the My SJS4 system.
If the agency is still in my SJS4, contact the agency directly and make sure that they have availability for you to volunteer there. Obtain the volunteer supervisor’s name and contact information (you will use that in My SJS4).
Go to My SJS4 and register for your 10 hours of community service and sign all of the contracts. If you live out of the area or you are having difficulty finding an agency, contact me immediately and we will come up with a plan to complete your hours.
Completing Your Hours
Please do not start working at your agency until you have completely signed up in My SJS4 as that is your contract and release of liability.
Complete your hours at the agency, if the agency has a computer log in, that will serve as your time card. You must obtain documentation each time you work at the agency that you will submit with your paper.
You can use this time card for agencies that do not have their own time card or computer system. community.learning@sjsu.edu or for any questions, comments, ideas.
The system is set up to allow you to enter 2 agencies, however, I strongly discourage that as you need to provide all of the above information for each agency which is almost impossible to do in 6 pages. If you are having issues completing your hours at one agency, you must contact me immediately.
If you are trying trying to add an agency, please contact me immediately before you start the process.
